Singh Sabha Gurdwara was started in the late 1960’s.
Ceremonies were held at local schools before the purchase of the property as 130 Northumberland Road. The next door property was purchased later and the Gurdwara expanded.
Punjabi classes were started at the Gurdwara and helped various youngsters to learn their mother tongue and also learnt to recite Gurbani and Path.
In 1983 St Lukes Church, a Grade 2 Listed building was purchased.
The Church was completely renovated from the inside and a second floor was added to the Church. The second floor upstairs became the main prayer hall. All the work was done by volunteers and paid for by the Southampton Community.
The work was finally completed and the New Gurdwara opened in April 1990.
Since its opening a lift for disabled persons has been added and also a car park created on the side of the Gurdwara.
The Gurdwara has been registered as a Place of Worship and also a registered building for Civil Marriages.
Civil Marriages have to be performed before the Lawan. Civil Marriage at the Gurdwara can only be performed on the same day as the Lawan.
The Bride and Groom both have to register at their local Registry Office to get permission to have their Civil marriage at the Gurdwara.
